- THE MANAGEMENT

It's interesting to see authentic French hip hop be so receptive to hard electro. That kind of collaborative effort between such widely different genres isn't as common here in the states. Genevan Heathen works with both; and man, that shit is dope.

TTC is a powerhouse group based out of Paris that includes other TRUSTBOSTON favorites like Teki Latex, DJ Orgasmic, Cuizinier, and electro producer Para One. Heathen is extended family with these guys and the French label Institubes, who represents producers and DJ's like Surkin, Bobmo, & Jean Nipon: all of whom had had their tracks featured on this site.

While we couldn't get a hold of him in person, we got this email and realized that Genevan Heathen is a Boston native; kinda. We like him though.

TB: Why the name "Genevan Heathen"?

My friend Mike gave me this name back in 1998 or something like that, maybe 99. Same dude that was behind the incredible Achilles store/restaurant in Boston. Didn't even know what "heathen" meant back then. It just stuck though.

TB: We first found out about you as an MC throughout the Cuizinier mixtapes, how did you hook up with Cuizi-cuiz / TTC?

GH: I met Cuiz through Teki Latex. I met Teki in 1998 at 7L & Esoteric/Mr.Lif show in Geneva. Del Tha Funky Homosapian was also performing. Basically Teki and I became friends and I met the whole city of Paris via Teki. Cuiz loved the notgoinganywhere mixtapes I was doing under the moniker "John B Rambo" and Murda Funk, the radio show I was hosting with DJ Raze, so he asked me to host his tapes.

TB: You're also a musician, what started that?

GH: I have no clue! I started by hosting the radio show for DJ Raze, then came the Cuizi tapes, then I started constantly recording stuff with Mattfoley when visiting Boston and with Goon Kid in Geneva, and doing guest appearances for Teki or Cuiz or whoever asked me to. It just happened and it's just fun to do.

TB: There seems to be a throwback, 80s/90s feel to all of your music and music videos ; why this era? What does it mean to you?

GH: It's just trying to recapture my childhood I guess. I grew up in these years and there's nothing more magical than discovering music and movies, art in general, when you're 12, or 16. Nothing will probably beat listening to NWA for the first time or watching T2 at the theatre. All these moments have had a huge influence on me and it's felt in the music or videos I guess. It's not premeditated though, I really do whatever the fuck I feel like doing, and that changes every day.

TB: You know Julian / Red Foxxx, who is a prominent nightlife figure and a good friends of ours here in Boston. How do y'all know each other?

GH: Of course! I don't even know how I met Red Foxxx originally, we have many friends in common, whether it's the TTC crew or my Boston friends, or even my girlfriend who is from Boston too. Man, I'm keeping this super Boston-related. HOT. But yeah man, I was even hypeman for Cuizinier at a show in Boston with Hearthrob once, haha. Oh I hosted a Hearthrob party once too!

TB: So wait, are you from Boston?

GH: Dude, I went to BU! My dad used to work in the US a lot when I was a kid, so I spent a lot of summers there. Then I did my degree at BU. I have been in Boston A LOT these past years cause my girlfriend lived there until recently too. I also love going to SXSW and WMC every year. And my grandmother was American and from Boston.

TB: Rad. So what projects are you working on as of lately?

GH: I'm constantly working on tons of things and now that I think of it, I'm really unorganized about it, haha. I have a 3-songs ep called Charlie Sheen coming out on vinyl really soon. I'd say it's half home decoration half record. The packaging is insane. Otherwise trying to finish my ever-changing "first official full-length release"...and a millions of mixtapes, videos, and t-shirts as always.

TB: What is a good technique that you use to lure in the ladies?

GH: Whisper French in the ear. One line that always works is "minuscule bout de papier, dis rien à ton keumé".

This past Tuesday, Kingdom aka Ezra Rubin, graciously destroyed the dance floor at ZuZu in Central Sq. Cambridge. As part of the Together Festival, Kingdom joined Nu:Life residents D'Hana, DJ Rizzla, and Justincredible; fusing house, electro, UK garage and dancehall in one room. I spoke with Ezra outside before his set to get an idea of what to expect.
"I would call my music bass music or club music, generally. I guess I have a lot of influences that are mixed in; classic rave, grime, UK garage, old school house, some new age/ethereal elements in the background."
Kingdom struck me as a particularly awesome name, so when I asked him about it, he said it was between that and DJ Excalibur. We laughed and agreed Kingdom was a better moniker.
"I used to be in a band with Kevin Driscoll from Boston, he plays as DJ Lonewolf in LA right now. We made dance music; my favorite song that I performed was called Kingdom. (When deciding between the names DJ Excalibur and Kingdom), I emailed like 10 friends and asked them, Kingdom just sounded better"
On Thursday, I went to the genre panel at MassArt's Tower Auditorium. There, Ezra was joined by panelists Mikey Lee (Coralcola), Sian (UK), Geoff White, James Therrien, and George Gayl (Silent Disco).
The panel, moderated by Wayne Marshall of wayneandwax.com, was about genre in electronic music and how it effects the of the productions of the artist, how it changes in positive or negative ways, how genre's fracture, etc. Ezra stated " Wayne's very smart and has been very supportive of what I've been doing for years now." When asked about being on the panel he stated that "people do comment that my music mixes a lot of genres together; I think that type of multi genre music is getting to be more popular as more and more genres start to fuse together."
Kingdom's fantastic debut EP "Mind Reader" was just released this month on Fool's Gold Records.

Sorry for the lack of updates, everyone!

We're revamping the TRUSTBOSTON blog and relaunching TRUST very soon. Keep you're ears to the ground, y'all.

Ouch. My heart. Looks like ACID GIRLS (LA) are playing another episode of HEARTHROB tomorrow. TRUSTBOSTON and FOURTOTHEFLOOR are hosting Work! at ZuZu down the street the same night. Jeez, I'd be a lying son of a bitch if I said I'd only be at one of them. Notice that our good friend REDFOXX also seems to be double booked. Lets party like him and run up and down Mass Ave in a drunken stupor. Sounds like a Tuesday to me...
As I've said once before, The Goodlife Bar & Lounge in Downtown Boston is the new hip spot for the clubbing elite. Gone are the days of massive super clubs aglow in neon; the current party crowd seeks a more intimate place to let loose. Along with fabulous cocktails and a superb vodka lounge downstairs, the Goodlife also carries the award for best dance club in Boston of 2009 via The Weekly Dig.
If you're familiar with the nightlife scene, you've probably noticed a change in this establishments clientele. Once a location that seemed to cater only to business suits and girls named Stacey, the club has opened its arms to those more musically inclined; with that nod, local production teams like So Dope!, Basstown, and FTW have all held successful events here.
So what happens when you take some of the best House DJ's in the city and put them in this stellar location? An Evolution, of sorts. This Thursday, TRUSTBOSTON's Justincredible, along with premiere DJ's John Barera, Eli Wilkie, Joseph Colbourne and others showcase the latest and hottest tracks from everyone's favorite genre of electronic dance music. No contest here. Let there be house music!

Ahh, New Years Eve. The pinnacle of every party cat's year. On December 31st we reflect on our achievements, set goals for the future, and if you're like me, look back and learn from our hot mess mistakes. This night only comes once a year and its crucial you spend it with beautiful people and obscene amounts of alcohol; where will you be? Rather than bore y'all with a list of parties to ponder over, I'll just tell you where to find us. We are the party.
TRUSTBOSTON APPROVED
You'll find our lovely Justincredible here at the Liberty Hotel: doing what you say? Why, being fabulous of course! My advice is simple: look proper and bring cash.
You'll find me and my eclectic crew at Villa Victoria this Thursday night, toasting to the new year with beer and such. GATEKEEPER (Chicago) is headlining this night; fans of SALEM and 80's horror movie soundtracks should not miss out on this.
Allston's best dressed folk are throwing a NYE bash of their own; TRUST contributors, affiliates and friends know RESCUE at the Model Cafe is the place to be if you want to to celebrate locally and without it costing ridiculous sums.
And where ever you choose to go, do remember to leave a card or something in our pockets; we want to remember you in the morning. Happy News Years!

xo,
TRUSTBOSTON

I am INCREDIBLY excited to reveal the new, original ROGUEWAVES ( Justincredible + Zak Broman ) track that we have been working on, with amazing production help from Southern Belle's Isom Innis (http://myspace.com/whatissouthernbelle).

The track includes guest female vocals with dreamy, pounding synths and a glitchy bass hop. This is what we envisioned our music would sound like if we ever got around to making it. This is from our upcoming debut EP. Vocals are courtesy of Keeley Bumford (myspace.com/keeleybumford)

Any feedback is appreciated. We hope you enjoy.

Here is what he would look like if he was a member of the cattle family.
